The Story of GoPro | Founder Nicholas Woodman is RICH!

If you haven’t heard the story of GoPro’s humble beginnings over 10 years ago (2002), this video from Forbes is a pretty cool look at the company that has changed action sports more than any other (even more than Red Bull) over the past 10 years. At this point, GoPro Founder/CEO Nicholas Woodman is worth over a billion dollars. Not bad for a surfer/entrepreneur, eh? This might be the only time we embed a video from Forbes on Earlyups, but trust us: this is interesting stuff!

*The interview gets most interesting at the 1:45 mark when Nicholas talks about GoPro’s niche in the camera market and how it can coexist with Smart Phones. Nicholas talks about the start of GoPro being driven by his desire to capture a multi-month surf trip with friends (take a look at that first production model of GoPro!). With GoPro going public soon, this is a cool look at a company we’ve all seen grow from small to huge. Bear with the ad that precedes the video (don’t worry, we’re not getting paid!)

In today’s brew: Smith doing big things with the Sarah Burke Foundation, Aurelien Ducroz heli-skiing in Norway, skiing the Skillet on Mount Moran and more…

The good folks at Smith Optics have been able to donate $26,000 to the Sarah Burke Foundation. Smith created a special edition Sarah Burke Foundation I/OS goggle and sold them out, with $26,000 of proceeds going to the foundation. Good on you, Smith!

Skiing the Skillet on Mt. Moran | Coach Joel Bettner and some of the CUFST posse had quite the mission on Mt. Moran in Grand Teton National Park. This is a signature line in the Tetons that offers up over 5k vert of continuous skiing to Jackson Lake in good snow conditions. These guys encountered rain, snow, whitecaps on the lake and lots of bushwhacking. But they got it done. Nice work boys! Read more on Joel Bettner’s blog and check out the video below:

Sounds like the Pyrenees went off this season. According to Adria Millan it was the best season in 10 years and their local resort Baqueira picked up over 14 meters of snow. Looks pretty good to us (especially right now!):
